Map Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe - complete itinerary
Africa has always been neglected by us, considered as a vulnerable area, particularly the north and increasingly the center, due to the threat of terrorism. However, we had forgotten that there are vast areas within the continent waiting to be explored, and that a nature abundant in rain makes them fascinating during our autumn, with their yellowish colors and the density of animals found in areas rich in springs: experiences to be lived. Nothing compares to the East in terms of cultural and spiritual aspects, but it is precisely the limited presence of humans that allows us to still see unimaginable landscapes, impossible to enjoy at our latitudes. It's a different Africa than we imagine: here there are no conflicts, people live in acceptable conditions, and hunger is not a major problem. Of course, in rural areas, the population lives in huts and does not have the comforts we take for granted, but the hard work of the people combined with a harsh yet rewarding nature during the rainy season, creates decent living conditions for everyone.
We decided to approach this new experience differently, in order to have a better integration with those around us. A four-wheel drive vehicle with tents on the roof will be our means of transport and home for two weeks, complete with kitchen, cellar, warehouse, etc. This allows us to stay within budget, avoiding the very expensive lodges found both in Namibia and Botswana; in these countries, due to limited accommodation options, we have decided to prioritize luxury accommodations, which sometimes include flights and can cost over $4000 per night. For various reasons, this way of taking holidays does not fit our preferences, so we choose to travel independently, deciding on the route to take and staying at campsites in truly idyllic locations. In some cities, our needs or the climate make us prefer to stay in hotels.
THE TRIP
The dunes of Sossusvlei, the highest in the world, where the light plays, enhancing the color contrast; the red or variable-colored deserts, from the Namib, a sea without shores, to the Kalahari, the land of the San people; the lagoons of Walvis Bay, rich in flamingos and pelicans, a true paradise for ornithologists; the Skeleton Coast and the "noisy" colony of albatrosses of Cape Cross; the sand dune mountains of the Damaraland, with its rugged landscapes featuring the rock engravings of Twyfelfontein; Etosha National Park with its stunning "pan" and animals gathered around large water pools; the Caprivi vegetation, a different world from Namibia; the Okavango Delta in Botswana, where the river bears the same name ends in a maze of swamps and creates the life of many creatures; Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, where nature roars with the thunderous sound of falling water.
